15th August is the darkest chapter in our history. It’s a day of mourning and lamentation. A day when the Father of our Nation, our visionary leader, our inspiration and aspiration, the torch bearer of freedom for the world was heinously assassinated along with the majority of his family. The shockwave of this atrocity reverberated around the world, its injustice still burns in our hearts, and will always echo in eternity.

On that grievous night of 15 August 1975, evil struck the greatest Bengali of all time “Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman”, his wife and Mother of the Nation Sheikh Fazilatunnessa, eldest son Sheikh Kamal, middle child Sheikh Jamal, youngest son Sheikh Russell, Sheikh Kamal’s wife Sultana Kamal, Sheikh Jamal’s wife Rosy Jamal, Bangabandhu’s brother Sheikh Naser, Officer at SB Siddikur Rahman, Colonel Jamil, army soldier Syed Mahbubul Haque at his Dhanmondi residence. Their untimely passing will forever be remembered with lamentation and respect.

The assassins and conspirators did not understand though, that they could kill the body of our Father of the Nation, but they could never kill his spirit. Because Bangabandhu’s fire, his soul is immortal. This incredible human being, who taught the nation to rise, who fought his entire life for the freedom of the oppressed, who spent years in prison for the revolution, who led his people to victory against a barbaric regime, who gave us the gift of independence, will never be forgotten. And will forever be alive within the nation and the people of Bangladesh. On this day we mourn, and the world mourns with us.
